This invaluable scholarly monograph on abstract Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) reproduces scores of recently rediscovered paintings that had languished for decades in Soviet museums and in private collections. German art historian Hahl-Koch provides a wealth of new details on Kandinsky’s life and art, discussing, for example, his little-known experimental stage plays which strove for a synthesis of all the arts, and his friendships with Paul Klee, Arnold Schonberg and composer Thomas von Hartmann, who introduced the artist to Sufism, the mystical offshoot of Islam. Most chapters include generous excerpts from Kandinsky’s newspaper articles, essays and unpublished letters, creating the impression of a tolerant nonconformist who saw art as inseparably linked with the higher laws of the cosmos. The wonderful reproductions furnish an exciting glimpse of Kandinsky’s leap into abstraction after his early absorption of folk and religious art, fauvism and neo-impressionism.

About the Author
Jelena Hahl-Koch was, until recently, Curator at Lenbachhaus, Munich. She was co-publisher and part translator of Kandinsky’s collected writings, and has published many other catalogues, commentaries, and essays on the artist and his work. She taught at the Universities of Erlangen, Bern, and Austin, Texas, and has lectured frequently on Kandinsky at Harvard, UCLA, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, and other academic venues.

About the work: In the fall of 1975, in conjunction with the opening of the Oakland Museum exhibit of “Kinsey Photographer,” the authors published the first two volumes of their books by the same name. After a reviewer mentioned that the work should be shared with readers at a price less than the pricey $150 label for the excellent hardbound books from Scrimshaw Press. So the authors worked with Chronicle Books in San Francisco and in March 1978 they reprinted the combined two volumes of Kinsey Photographer, adding a third printing that fall after the first 10,000 were gobbled up.

This is the Second edition (1936)..If I were an interior designer or studying and researching historic design, I’d consider this book indispensible.. Published by Crown, the interior is clean, bright and unmarked. The cover edges and spine are foxed,, but the foxing design is rsomehow a lovely. design.
