“Landscape With Sunlit Castle in Ruins,” Oil on Canvas, Manner of Sidney R. Percy

A British oil on canvas landscape in the manner of, and possibly by, Sidney Richard Percy, (1821-1886), an English painter who specialized in dramatic British highland landscapes. Percy, né Williams, came from a successful family of painters, and he began to use the surname Percy around 1841 to differentiate himself from other members of the Williams family, becoming, himself, the most successful of the Williamses. Percy’s use of light is quite distinctive throughout his works; atmospheric yet conveyed with a striking lucidity. A sense of vast space, along with an absolute mastery of rocky mountain forms and surfaces are consistent throughout his oeuvre. This unsigned landscape dates probably to the third quarter of the 19th century, and features among the imposing landscape elements, a figure in Scottish dress fishing at the lower right hand corner. Signs of age, light craquelure. Reframed in a very good quality later frame.
